Goodbye, little Oreo

After a tough fight with age-related illnesses, little Oreo went on her journey this afternoon to Rainbow Bridge. She was such a special bunny to us and it was especially tough to lose her because she was our vey first rescue. When we found her at a high-kill animal shelter over 9 years ago, she was placed in a holding area dubbed "death row" and was only given one week to live due to over population at the shelter. She was an abandoned bunny, only about 3 months old when we got her and we are lucky to have found her at the right time.

Tank was a great supporter for Oreo when she was sick. Whenever we gave her medicine, Tank was there and ready to cheer her on. They even got to take a picture together for our holiday photo card.

Goodbye for now little Oreo. Run free and do bunny twirls under the rainbow. We all miss you terribly.

Update: We tried to register Tank several times for the Dog Show USA Contest, but unfortunately the website only gave us error messages. Oh well, Tank will always be our winner in all categories!

When we're not home, we have been crating Tank mainly for a few reasons: 1) to provide a haven of security for him while we're away; 2) not knowing his past history, we were unsure of destructive habits (although he hasn't shown any signs); and 3) possible separation anxiety and potential results (injuring himself, damage to furniture & objects around house, etc.).

After a series of test runs, we are happy to say that Tank is crate-free and is just a big lazy, sleepy dog on the couch while we're away. The crate is still accessible for him with the door open in case he chooses to hangout in there, which he does most nights to snooze, like in the picture above.

Goodies from Three Dog Bakery!

We took Tank to Three Dog Bakery today in Newport Beach and the folks there were touched by Tank's story and absolutely adored him. They were so kind and gave Tank all sorts of goodies: a giant peanut butter bone-shaped cookie, carob and peanut butter cookies and a nyla chew toy. We also bought him a new leash and a couple of squeaky toys. Thanks again to the kind folks at Three Dog!

Settling In

Tank has been with us for a couple of weeks now and we're all still going through an adjustment period. We're learning so much about being responsible dog owners! For the first few days, Tank didn't eat much and had an upset stomach. We've had to add cottage cheese or rice to his food. Understandably, he's in a new home and still settling in and learning to trust us. We took him to our vet for a check-up - he's in good health except for some skin allergies. He seems to be back into shape and is learning that he's in a loving home. Here are some pictures taken over the past few weeks:

Tank's First Bath

Tank was a dirty dog after playing at the park today, so we gave him his first bath. We didn't know what to expect since dogs either love or hate baths with a passion. Our old family dog, Jericho, loved baths so we were hoping that we'd have the same luck with Tank. Tank was such a good sport, but hesitant at first. He let us lather and bathe him, and afterward we used Romely's hair dryer to dry him. The bath ended with cookies and lots of hugs.

Here are photos from Tank's ride home a few days ago, just after we picked him up from Kay, Tank's foster mom. Tank did really well. We made a stop at Josh's parent's house before going home. Everyone fell in love with Tankers.

An Addition To Our Family

We recently adopted a sweet little dog named Tank, a 3-legged dog who was hit by a car last November. We fell in love with him after reading his story and seeing his pictures (below) on Noah's Bark. We hope to provide him a loving, safe and nurturing home.

Hi, My Name's Tank and I'm A Rescue Dog

I’m part American Staffordshire Terrier and part Mastiff. About 6 months ago, I was hit by a car and was left in the street. Luckily, Alex found me and she was kind enough to help me. She took me to a vet, but they couldn’t do much to help my front left leg. They tell me that there was nerve damage and there’s nothing that can be done for it. I don’t notice it too much since I can still run and play.

Alex found a temporary home for me, so for awhile I lived with Kay and my buddy, Molson. Kay taught me how to have good manners and even took me on seminars and speaking engagements as an example of a trainable and well-mannered pup! Through Kay and Noah's Bark, I found my Forever Home with Romely and Josh. I try to stay busy, but I nap most of the day. My friend, Nina, stops by and walks me while Josh and Romely are at work. But when Josh comes home, he and I run and play at the park. I also have 4 rabbit pals (Oreo, Patrick, Simon and Sydney), also adopted from animal shelters. We share carrots in the evenings.

Lots of people think that dogs like me are no good and just mean. Well, maybe that’s true for some dogs, but not me. You find mean dogs wherever you go, the same way you find mean people. If I decided to hate people based upon all the crummy people I’ve met, I’d be in a bad mood all the time. I think it’s a matter of giving everybody a chance -- both animals and people. You never know, somebody you think you might not like, might turn into your best friend. And I think it has a lot to do with how you grow up. If people around you are mean and not very nice, that’s the way you’re going to turn out. Good thing my Forever Home is a good place. I have a good feeling that even though I’ve had a pretty rough start, in the end, everything’s going to be just fine.
